Northwest District

The northwest district comprising the cities of Pasadena, South Pasadena, and San Marino displays middle-class to affluent household incomes. Median home values are among the highest in the ethnoburban region. The lower median household incomes and homeownership rates in Pasadena reflect a greater number of single and childless households. San Marino has the most affluent city in the ethnoburb.

The Chinese of the northwest district are the most culturally assimilated in the ethnoburb. The three cities exhibit the highest levels of educational attainment and linguistic assimilation. Chinese households in these three cities spoke more English and were less linguistically isolated. The linguistic isolation variable measures the percentage of households in which all members 14 years of age and over speak a non-English language and speak English less than “very well.”

Pasadena, the largest city in the San Gabriel Valley with a population of over 130,000 in 2000, is the economic engine of the northwest district. The city has over 5000 firms, including four of the six largest corporations in the San Gabriel Valley. Pasadena possesses a large retail and governmental employment sector, but also has a distinct educational, technology, and health complex. The California Institute of Technology is located in San Marino and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory is in northwest Pasadena. There is a surrounding technology and education complex. Hospitals and associated advanced medical services are also clustered in Pasadena. Employment in the Pasadena educational, technology, and health complex requires high levels of educational attainment and familiarity with the English language. The northwest district represents a zone of upward mobility and cultural assimilation into American society.
